Executive Board Meeting Minutes

President, Richard Boland opened the meeting at 9:03. Present: Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, Charlie Spencer, Ash Tyler, Linda Lemieux, Maggie Hoon, Hilton Holcomb, Becky Dus, David Barkley and Cathie Rod.

Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman gave a brief overview of her trip to Chattanooga, Southern Regional Conference. Good contacts were made, information gathered and Master Gardener logo items purchased. The MG international conference will be held in Little Rock in 07. Next regional conference will be in Oklahoma.

Reports from the following chairs:
Maggie Hoon - all volunteers get needed work list. The problem of MG members not having e mail will be discussed by Richard and Maggie with possible help from membership committee. The garden looked especially nice for the “Pond Tour”. Ash will have small bottles for spraying Roundup on weeds in beds. Summer intern and restitution workers will also help control weeds.
Hilton Holcomb - Spraying Roundup in big areas needs supervision. Most of irrigation is back on, but very labor intensive to repair. Other projects to hard scape are listed on web page. More color in needed in the garden. Bad weather has hindered some work.
Ash Tyler - Green House maintenance work continues. Potting soil, seeds and pots have been purchased to start new plants. Funds from restitution program have helped with some of these expenses.
Becky Dus - New association members are being added to the e mail list for the Newsletter.
Linda Lemieux - reported on current balance of funds and will have copies of same to pass out at general meeting. Current balance $23,787.37as of 6/16. Discussed insufficient funds on 4 checks received at plant sale. Checks will be resubmitted and she and Charlie will look into those that do not clear a second time.
Charlie Spencer - Day lily trip rescheduled to 7/5 with notification to all participants.
Summer youth program with 4H will offer 3 classes as follows: 7/25, 8/1 and 8/15 all offered in the am at the county extension center. The first class will be for 6-8 year olds time 9-11, the second for ages 9-12 and the third for over 12-time 9-12. Classes will follow the themes of “Life on the Farm” with volunteers needed.
Richard will do a hurricane seminar for the Coastal Garden Club at the BEMC on 9/25.
Charlie will be out the 1st part of Sept for hip operation.
New plaque has been ordered to add names of MG members who have volunteered more than 250 hrs.
Gave out information on MG individual and organization search for excellence to be awarded at the conference in Charlotte and Ideal Home Shows in Raleigh and Greensboro. State MG association does have an award for excellence with specific criteria which could be used by BCMG.
Association list of members researched, but still need to comply with dues paid. Those not in compliance will be deleted. This list will be purged next month. Completed list will be ready for updating at beginning of new year.
List of all members receiving awards at the 6/20 banquet will be printed in Newsletter.
General meeting on 6/22 will be an all day seminar with Dr. J. Davis speaking on herbs in am. and heirloom tomatoes and specialty vegetables in pm. The afternoon session will be open to the public for a fee of $5.00.
Volunteers are needed to pick cucumbers for experiments on new type of pest control. This is a project of Al Height's at Holden Brothers' farm.
David Barkley: Greatly appreciated time and effort of all volunteers to make the BCMG Botanical Garden the best stop on the tour of ponds.
Spoke of new type of slow release fertilizer with iron offered at Wal Mart to repel deer. Has milorganite which deer do not like. MG should experiment with this new product and give feed back.
Hiring of summer intern on hold with a possible start date of July 1.
Rain lily seed collection project may begin Friday, June 17 at Sunset Beach if any are available.
MG asked to collect ground pearl samples in Styrofoam cups and keep moist for a research project to help fight this pest problem.
Motion made by Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman and seconded by Hilton Holcomb to give $50 to be used as sponsorship for youth activities at the state ag agent conference.
Reminder to all volunteers to water 3 large flower pots in front of Extension office.
Costal Garden seminar on 9/21 - topic “landscaping”. Guest speakers will be announced.
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman: The recognition banquet has approximately 100 responses. Suggested that special thanks be given to Gina at the next general meeting rather than the banquet.
Reunion banquet has most class address lists research done. The class of 96 still needs work. The date is set for Nov. 10 as a garden party from 1-4 and the room has been reserved. Soft drinks and hors d'oeuvers will be served. Next meeting 7/17. Ash will look into purchasing a new tent to use at this event as well as other future MG events
The August guest speaker, Dr. Sorensen, will be newly retired and a special recognition may be in order.
Shirley gathered information from the SE regional conference in Chattanooga such as a fact sheet which could be developed for the BCMG program. Shirley, Richard and Charlie will discuss.
Shirley asked board members to read and offer opinions on policies & procedure and fact sheet. .
