Monthly Meeting Minutes

With 25 members present, the meeting was called to orderorder at 9:00 A.M., Vice President Alan Fitzgibbon presiding.
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed. The treasurerŐs report was approved. Committee reports were received as follows:
Greenhouse - Ash Tyler reported on progress on the propagation beds and general maintenance of the area.
Garden - Hilton Holcomb reported on various projects including irrigation, mulching of the demonstration area, turf, river rock and drainage, deer fence, deck, tree trail and smoking area. The work day scheduled for the first Monday in September will be held on Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday.
Program - Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman presented a list of programs for the remainder of 2005 and potential programs for early 2006. In addition, information about the state Master Gardener Conference to be held in Goldsboro was presented.
Coordinator - Charlie Spencer reported on Life of the Farm scheduled for the last two weeks in October, Heritage Day at Indigo Farms, seminar at Southport Wal-Mart, October plant sale. Help will be needed to pot ornamental grasses which will be shipped on August 29. Matthew at Winding River Golf Course has agreed to swap some ornamental grasses with us. A trip to the State Fair is scheduled for October 13 and 14. There will be a $50.00 good faith deposit.
David Barkley - Reported on an invitation to the All American Flower Trials. If he accepts, he will need Master Gardener help. David will be on the radio on September 2, will present a program for the Wildlife Commission at Fort Fisher on September 8 on invasive weeds. David has acquired a Mechanical Aquatic Weed Removal Device (and golf ball retriever). There will be a Pesticide Disposal Day in Southport on Saturday, September 17 in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The Cape Fear Fair will be October 30. We have been invited to operate the ticket sales and gate admissions. That portion of receipts paid us will go to support our 4H horticulture program.
New Business - Due to surplus in our treasury, the board felt the need to purchase some additional equipment. To that end we would like to purchase a riding lawn mower. The cost is $1400.00. A motion was made and seconded that such purchase be made. Following discussion, the membership approved the purchase.
Refreshments for the September meeting - Alan Fitzgibbon and Richard Boland will be responsible.
The business of the association being concluded, the meeting was adjourned. Following a brief break, an enlightening program on insects was given by Steve Bambara of NCSU.
