Monthly Meeting Minutes

With 27 of 179 members present, the meeting was called to order by President Dan Sokoloski at 9:00 A.M.
- Dan began the meeting by asking for volunteers to provide refreshments for the
November meeting. The call was answered by Cheryl Shufford. Due to Thanksgiving
being on the 24th which would be our regular meeting date, our meeting has been
moved to the 17th.
The Volunteer Center of Brunswick County extends an invitation for us to attend their award ceremony on November 2, during which Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman will be honored.
The nominating committee is at work on a slate for 2006. Please consider serving if called upon. It is an opportunity to serve and learn. - Peggy Meinzer gave a report of the nominating committee as follows: The nominations are open and names will be received gladly. To date, Richard Boland has offered for President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman for Vice President, and Linda Lemieux for Treasurer. We vote at the November meeting.
- Hilton Holcomb reported on work of the ÒHardscape Committee.Ó A call for help was issued for people with experience and /or interest in plumbing, electrical, mechanical, building, etc. This is an opportunity to learn as you serve.
- Charlie Spencer offered the following: Tree give-a-way; Talking Tree Trail progress;
inmate travel prohibitions have been removed but presently there is no man-power available.
There is a possibility of getting local inmates involved. There will be a plant clinic at
the Southport Wal-Mart on November 19. Plant sale yielded approximately $2000.00; $60.00
was gained on sale of ÒGardening by the MonthÓ at seminars. Life on the Farm is lost for
this year. However, due to receiving a grant, Supply Elementary School will participate
in a USDA program that will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to the school. We will
be involved by doing ÒLife on the FarmÓ kinds of activities in conjunction with this
program.
Twenty six people attended the State Fair (with reasonably good behavior). A report of the trip will be in the newsletter. - Arlene Hubner reported on the Holiday party scheduled for December 13th. Volunteers are needed for setting up, decorating and cleaning up. Ann Duke will head up the committee.
- Linda Lemieux gave the TreasurerÕs Report. The month started with $12,105.35; deposits of $110.00 for Gardening by the Month, 24 for a raffle, $2,074.00 for plant sales. Expenses were: $598.56 for plant sale, $912.98 from contingency for limestone and dollies. Present balance is $12,801.81.
- Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman reported on speakers for meetings. She and David Barkley have firm commitments for the next six months.
- David Barkley announced award winners for State Fair entries. Bill Duke and Cynthia Boland won Blue Ribbons and a cash prize of $10.00 for food entries. He announced a pesticide training day and spoke of his plans for developing a landscaping in the garden, and announced the regional Master Gardening Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee in June 2006 and the international conference in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2007.
- Dan announced that budget requests for 2006 must be submitted by November 8.
