Monthly Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Richard Boland at 9:05. There were 27 in attendance.


The minutes of September 27, 2007 were approved without being read.


Announcements: Richard stated that low attendance due to the number of Master Gardeners working at "Life on the Farm" today. Charlie's operation is scheduled today October 25, 2007 and he will be out for 4 weeks. He expects to be up walking this afternoon. David Barkley is recovering from his operation and should be back in January. Lynn Schwartzkopf offered information for a violin concert at Odell Williamson Auditorium this Sunday October 28th presented by a very talented 15 year old female. Seats are available for the 3PM performance, the evening is sold out. Lynn also stated Life on the Farm has been very successful with 4 days completed.


Gardens and Green House: Jim & Hilton requested help at the Monday garden session November 5th. There are 700 bulbs to be planted along with creeping thyme to be placed between steeping stones. Strong backs are needed. Hilton encouragers anyone to sign up for Life on the Farm, remember it's hotline time. Large rocks in pond need to be moved and cleaned. Signs have been erected to name companies and people who have made donations to Brunswick County Botanical Garden. Ash Taylor: Needs help in the Greenhouse in November and December. Plants are being received that need to be planted for plant sales next year.


Vice President: Shirley Waggoner- Eisenman reported the 07 State MG conference in Raleigh was attended by approximately 450 people. She will have more details to share regarding the 07 conference at the next meeting. Shirley gave the following information concerning the 08 State Master Gardener conference being held in Brunswick County.
The 08 State MG Conference Committee is in the early stages of planning the conference. A motion was made and seconded to loan the 08 State MG conference committee $1000.00 from the Brunswick County Master Gardener Volunteer Association. This loan is used to make the deposit at Sea Trail and to be repaid by the State Master Gardener Conference. The motion was unanimously carried.
Program Speaker - Unable to attend so a Bryce Lane tape shown instead.


Nominating Committee: Beverly Mastrovich, Linda Rudick, Lynn Schwartzkopf reported on the Proposed Slate of Officers for next year. The committee met, reviewed, and spoke to various Master Gardeners regarding various offices. The list is as follows: President: Shirley Wagoner-Eisenman, Vice President: Grace Wrigley, Treasure: Al Smith, Nominating Committee: Dominique Lowenstein and Joe Loughlin At the November meeting additional officers can be proposed from the floor, then a vote will be taken.


2008 State MG Conference. The committees which have been created are as follows:
Conference Treasurer: Bill Finley,
Gift Bags, Golf Shirts, Tee Shirts: Pat, Maggie and Cathie,
Publicity, Rosters, Speakers (contact Shirley if you have any suggestion. She has a list started but if you have any suggestions let her know.),
Statistician, Tours: Ann Marie Bellamy -Brook Green Gardens; Indigo Farms; Orton Plantation; Arboretum New Hanover Wineries in our Area,
Vendor Space- sell for $225 ($35.00 goes for table 2 chairs and skirt). Anyone knowing of interested parties contact Shirley.
Program Ads - Business Card $35.00 / 1/4 Page $55/ 1/2 Page $85/ full page $155.00 - all adds camera ready.
Sponsorship - for breaks, luncheon, banquet, box lunch on tour, reception or a donation to be used at discretion of event coordinator. A half portion can also be sponsored as well. Shirley has a break down of what she thinks a half portion would cost. Half of a break $1,000 / 1/2 a lunch $2,500/ 1/2 a banquet $3,500/ 1/2 a box lunch $500 and 1/2 a reception $3,000.

Shirley requested that we sign up for committees we are interested in. Additionally we need to get started on this by the first of the year.

Suggested Conference Names: Gardening in the State You Are In / Gardening in North Carolina. Shirley feels we need to come up with some other names before making a final selection. Please let Shirley know if you have any suggestions.

Additional items to consider and work on: Door Prizes / Invitations / Programs / Postage / Conference Flow Charts / Hospitality Suite / Tours / Reception ideas - Sea Trails or Silver Coast Winery or La Bellame / Host and or Hostess for each Speaker / Morning Speaker and afternoon workshops / Vendor shows open when no presentations, in morning, at breaks after workshops / Workshops (15 are planned). Contact Shirley with any suggestions for workshops or speakers
